MSc Vishal Kale will defend his doctoral thesis on Friday 13th of November at 12.00 in Pharmacity Auditorium.
The thesis topic is “Blue and Uv-Emitting Upconversion Nanoparticles: Synthesis and (Bio) Analytical Applications”. In the thesis the luminescent properties of the nanocrystalline NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ particles are improved and their use as labels and internal light sources in biomedical applications is introduced.
Mr. Kale has been working in the Department of biotechnology but is jointly supervised by Mika Lastusaari. The work of Mr. Kale is a great example how you can combine the chemistry behind the synthesis developement and the use of nanoparticles in applications in multidisciplinary areas.

FSRUO Annual Workshop & School 2015 is held in Helsinki, Kumpula Science Campus on 3.-4.12.2015
Mika is giving a lecture in FSRUO (Finnish Synchrotron Radiation User Organisation) annual workshop in Helsinki on the matter of “Using Synchrotron-Based Methods for Understanding Solid State Oxides and Fluorides”
The 9th Annual MatSurf Seminar is held 9.11.2015 in Deparment of Physics and Astronomy, Quantum Auditorium from 9.00 forward.
We’re attending the seminar with a presentation of Hellen “Luminescent Non-Doped Laponites: Anionic Layered Nanosilicates” and also contribute to poster session starting at 15.20.
MatSurf stands for Turku University Centre for Materials and Surfaces and is a joint project of several research groups to make the most of the know-how and instruments in the field of Materials Research in Turku, Finland.
We’re attending the 9th International Conference on Luminescent Detectors and Transformers of Ionizing Radiation in Tartu, Estonia on September 20-25.
Go see Mika at the poster Tu-P-41 on Tuesday (16:20-18:20 Poster Session I) with the topic “On the mechanism of persistent luminescence and tenebrescence in Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl2,S)”
